Principles of Costing

These units and assessments are mandatory requirements of the apprenticeship and will be completed as part of the apprentice’s on-programme learning. The form part of the AAT Certificate in Accounting (Level 2) qualification.

1:1 sessions with a Coach to showcase the knowledge, skills and behaviours as set out in the apprenticeship standard

Gateway

The student, employer and Premier Training sign off the apprentice as competent against the apprenticeship standard and ready to sit their end point assessment.

End-Point Assessment

The end-point assessment for the apprenticeship is made up of a structured interview and the Business Environment Synoptic assessment.

The end-point assessment is only available after the apprentice has successfully completed 12 months of on programme learning.

The Business Environment Synoptic Assessment is only available after the structured interview has been completed.

Successfully completing the Business Environment Synoptic Assessment will enable the apprentice to achieve their AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting qualification.

The structured interview will last for 60 minutes and is conducted online via Zoom with an Independent Assessor from AAT.

The AAT Qualification

The AAT qualification is included as part of their on-programme learning. Apprentices will work through 4 modules, each requiring a minimum of 70% in their live assessments.

Introduction to Bookkeeping

Learn the basics of double-entry bookkeeping and how to process everyday financial transactions.

Principles of Bookkeeping Controls

Dive into control accounts, reconciliations, payroll, error correction, and the use of journals.

Principles of Costing

Explore how to track costs, compare budgets, and apply basic spreadsheet skills for financial analysis.

Business Environment

Understand the legal system, corporate social responsibility, ethics, and sustainability. This unit forms part of the End-Point Assessment (EPA).

Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours

Alongside technical training, apprentices get dedicated one-to-one support from a Coach. These sessions are tailored to help them develop the right skills at the right time for their role. To satisfy the apprenticeship standard, they will need to complete the following duties as part of their role:

Duty 1: Understand the organisation’s activities and how they affect accounting and finance.

Duty 2: Collect and process financial data from sources like business records.

Duty 3: Review financial data to spot any issues with its quality or accuracy, following the provided guidance.

Duty 4: Correct mistakes in financial data, and escalate any issues that are beyond your control.

Duty 5: Match up transactional data (like invoices, orders, bank statements, and payroll) to reduce errors in financial reports.

Duty 6: Plan and discuss your workload with your supervisor to make sure tasks are completed efficiently and on time.

Duty 7: Communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders using the right methods, such as phone calls, emails, face-to-face meetings, or video calls.

Duty 8: Use financial software to input and manage data safely, following the organisation’s instructions.

Duty 9: Support your team members to help ensure that financial tasks are completed on time and to a high standard.

These units and assessments are mandatory requirements of the apprenticeship and will be completed as part of the apprentice’s on-programme learning. The form part of the AAT Diploma in Accounting (Level 3) qualification.

The student, employer and Premier Training sign off the apprentice as competent against the apprenticeship standard and ready to sit their end point assessment.

Throughout the apprenticeship, the apprentice will gather a portfolio of evidence, which will be submitted as part of the gateway process.

End-Point Assessment

The end-point assessment for the apprenticeship is made up of a portfolio reflective professional discussion and a knowledge based computer based assessment.

The end-point assessment is only available after the apprentice has successfully completed 12 months of on programme learning.

The professional discussion and knowledge assessment can be done in any order, and the timing will be agreed upon between the apprentice, their coach, and line manager.

The professional discussion will last for 60 minutes and is conducted online via Zoom with an Independent Assessor from AAT.

The independent assessor will review the apprentice’s portfolio before the professional discussion.

The AAT Qualification

The AAT qualification is included as part of their on-programme learning. Apprentices will work through 4 modules, each requiring a minimum of 70% in their live assessments.

Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements (FAPS)

Apprentices will learn how to apply advanced bookkeeping techniques, including handling acquisitions and disposals of non-current assets, and preparing financial statements.

Tax Processes for Businesses (TPFB)

Apprentices will get to grips with VAT rules, how to calculate it, and how to manage VAT returns using the Making Tax Digital (MTD) system. They’ll also cover payroll basics and the consequences of errors or late payments when it comes to tax.

Management Accounting Techniques (MATS)

This module teaches apprentices how management accounting works, focusing on costing methods, spreadsheet skills, and cash management principles that businesses use to stay on top of their finances.

Business Awareness (BUAW)

This module covers the different types of businesses, their structures, and how they’re governed. Apprentices will also learn about the legal and economic factors that affect how businesses operate in today’s market.

Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours

Alongside technical training, apprentices get dedicated one-to-one support from a Coach. These sessions are tailored to help them develop the right skills at the right time for their role. To satisfy the apprenticeship standard, they will need to complete the following duties as part of their role:

Duty 1: Help with monthly and year-end financial reporting by collecting data from various sources, like different departments within the organisation or clients if you’re in a practice. This includes both regular and unexpected data needs.

Duty 2: Keep financial and accounting records up to date by gathering information from different sources, ensuring all data is collected on time—even when requests come with tight deadlines.

Duty 3: Help protect the organisation by keeping an eye out for suspicious activities, such as signs of money laundering.

Duty 4: Assist in preparing financial and accounting records, like data for tax returns, audit documentation, or reconciliations, under the supervision of senior staff.

Duty 5: Share financial and accounting data with relevant people, ensuring that key information is communicated clearly.

Duty 6: Support the use of digital tools and software to help maintain accurate and timely financial records.

Duty 7: Use digital systems safely to protect the organisation’s cybersecurity and ensure all data handling meets legal requirements.

Once the programme is complete and all mandatory and optional units are passed, apprentices will earn the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting.

The mandatory units, completed as part of the apprentice’s on-programme learning, include:

Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements: This unit covers how to prepare and understand financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant accounting standards.

Applied Management Accounting: Learners will develop skills in using management accounting techniques to support business decision-making, including budgeting, forecasting, and performance analysis.

Internal Accounting Systems and Controls: This unit focuses on setting up and maintaining effective internal systems to ensure accurate financial reporting and safeguard against fraud.

In addition to the mandatory units, apprentices can choose two optional units from the following:

Business Tax: This unit teaches the basics of business tax, including VAT, corporation tax, and how to ensure a business meets its tax obligations.

Personal Tax: Learners will gain an understanding of personal tax, covering areas like income tax, tax returns, and compliance.

Audit and Assurance: This unit covers the process of auditing financial statements, ensuring that they’re accurate and compliant with regulations.

Credit and Debt Management: Learners will understand how to manage credit, reduce bad debt, and ensure smooth cash flow within the business.

For employers, having a Level 4 qualified professional accounting technician brings numerous benefits, including the ability to handle more complex financial tasks, improve efficiency in the finance department, and provide expert insights that support informed business decisions.

Eligibility

Apprentices should have one of the following qualifications: AAT Diploma in Accounting (Level 3), AAT Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping, ACCA Applied Knowledge Level, CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting, ICAEW Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) or BTEC National Diploma in Accounting.

Before enrolling, Premier Training will have a chat with all apprentices to make sure the apprenticeship is the right fit for them. They’ll review their previous qualifications and experience to ensure they are ready to embark on their level 4 journey. Don’t worry – they’ll guide them through the process and make sure they’re set up for success!

Anyone employed in England, in a relevant role, and learning new skills can apply. Employers often prefer candidates with GCSE grade 5 or equivalent in Maths and English. If not, Premier Training provides free support to ensure apprentices achieve these qualifications during the programme.
